Are You Stressed Out?

"I'm so stressed out!" How often do you hear or say this? Stress is a subject that has been studied and written about since 1936, yet still over 80% of illnesses treated in this country are stress-induced. In his popular book, The Stress of Life, Dr. Hans Selye speaks of three stages the body goes through when continually under stress.

  • The Alarm Stage is the body's initial response to a perceived threat or physical challenge.
  • The Resistance Stage occurs after prolonged periods in the Alarm Stage.
  • This leads into the Exhaustion Stage.

There are many different symptoms and even named diseases that are linked to each one of the stages. For example, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Fibromyalgia are often found when a person is in the second or third stages.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, insomnia, lack of concentration, and depression are all symptoms found in the Exhaustion Stage.

It is important to realize that it is not the degree of the emotional stress in one's life that causes physical problems, but the body's response to such stresses that creates physical disease.

There are three key systems of the body that go out of balance with constant stress. These are the Nervous System, the Endocrine (hormonal) System, and the Immune System. To treat these physical manifestations of stress, one must get these systems back in balance. Then the body can handle the emotional stresses of life without causing physical problems. In this way, many so-called incurable diseases can essentially be cured.

So, if your doctor tells you your problem is because of stress and then does nothing to help your body regain balance of these three systems (which, incidentally, is not attained through the use of medical drugs), then find yourself a doctor who is trained in natural and holistic medicine and get to the source of the problem and handle it once and for all.
